Passover Seder Plate, 1996, silver plate over brass and copper, 3x15x15 inches
My Seder (meaning order-of-things) Plate, a hexagonal box covered by six hinged triangular leaves, reveals the ceremonial foods when opened -- it could be uncovered leaf by leaf, setting the stage for the explanation of each weighty word, each ritual food.
But because the festival occurs only once a year, I have added more key words on the cover leaves themselves, as reminders whenever the plate is seen: Pessah, or passover the festival itself, and the headings of the Haggadah, the text followed right through the ceremony (Koreh, Zafun, Kadesh, Nirzah, and Hallel, the song-filled sequence of prayers).
